Pau-brasil (Paubrasilia echinata), also known as brazilwood or pernambuco, is the national tree of Brazil and a timber species famous for its dense orange-red heartwood, historical red dye, and use in musical instrument bows.

Wood Characteristics

Color: Freshly cut heartwood is a vivid orange-red or fuchsia, darkening to a deep rich brown or dark red through natural oxidation.

Density: Exceptionally heavy, hard, and dense; it sinks in water and is remarkably durable against decay.

Workability: Takes a brilliant natural polish, though processing suffers from high waste rates during manual selection.

Bow Making: Considered the gold standard for crafting high-end violin, cello, and bow instruments (often called Pernambuco wood).

National Identity: Gave Brazil its name due to the fiery red color of its timber, which resembled glowing embers (brasa)
